Private Label Sales Hit Record High in 2009

NEW YORK —Private labels unit share reached an all-time high in 2009, reports Supermarket News. They report Private Label Manufacturers Association’s 2010 Private Label Yearbook  found store brand unit share was 23.7 percent in supermarkets last year, which was driven by a 6.4-percent increase in private label unit sales and a 1.7-percent decline in that of national brands.

Supermarket News also noted the report showed private labels accounted for 90 percent of all gains in supermarkets, adding 2.9 percent in new sales while national brands were flat  at 0.1 percent. Sales of store brands in the food channel also hit a record at $55.5 billion.
