WASHINGTON—Food Day 2011, a “celebration of healthy, affordable and sustainably grown food," is scheduled for Oct. 24. In addition to more than 1,500 events planned across the nation, the organizers of the event, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), have compiled two lists: the “Terrible Ten" factors affecting the health of Americans, and the “Terrific Ten" factors worth celebrating.

“This collection of terribles symbolizes some of the things that Food Day is trying to change," said Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of CSPI and founder of Food Day 2011. “It’s time to encourage Americans to ‘eat real,’ which means ‘out’ with the Froot Loops and ‘in’ with real fruit. It means more food from farmers markets—and much less food, if any, from fast-food drive-throughs and vending machines."

The list of “terribles" includes Coca-Cola, McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder, salt, feedlot beef, Froot Loops, Jack DeCoster’s egg farms, lobbying groups, subsidies for ethanol, white flour and vending machines.

On the flip side, the “terrifics" include water, Mediterranean and Asian diets, the NYC health department, sustainable and organic foods, farmer’s markets, federal food programs, Michelle Obama, breastfeeding, Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Coalition of Imokalee Workers.
