SUMMERLAND, British Columbia—The Associated Press is reporting that Canadian biotech firm Okanagan Specialty Fruits is petitioning the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for approval to market a genetically modified (GMO) apple that keeps from browning.

According to the company's Web site, its Arctic apple features a patented Polypheunol Oxidase (PPO) technology that silences the browning reaction, to deliver a fruit that will not turn brown when cut or bruised. The company claims the non-browning technology will help increase sales of apples for snacks, and salads, as well as lower costs for producing fresh slices.
