RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif.—The amino acid L-theanine was confirmed GRAS by FDA for use in a variety of food products. Found in green tea, L-theanine induces a mild, relaxing effect when consumed in foods and beverages.

According to Blue California, the company that submitted its L-TeaActive™ L-theanine ingredient for GRAS confirmation, research shows that L-theanine “stimulates the production of alpha brain waves increasing mental and physical relaxation without drowsiness." Further, the company notes, “other studies show that a combination of L-theanine and caffeine may have a synergistic effect on cognitive function and mood."

Blue California’s L-TeaActive™, L-theanine standardized to 98%, is produced from green tea leaves and other natural ingredients using a proprietary manufacturing process that ensures high purity, lower cost, efficacy and safety.

Cecilia McCollum, Blue California’s Executive Vice President, commented: “We are very pleased with the FDA’s GRAS confirmation for our product. Our goal was to set a new standard for purity for natural L-theanine derived from green tea and we have achieved it."
