CINCINNATI—Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G) expanded last week’s nationwide recall of dry pet food to include veterinary and some specialized dry pet food because the products may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recall involves all dry sizes and varieties of Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure All, and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin. All of the recalled products have use by dates of July 1, 2010 through Dec. 1, 2011.
The products are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers throughout the United States and Canada. No canned food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by the recall.
Last week, P&G recalled Iams Veterinary Formula Feline Renal in 5.5-pound bags. The company warned that people handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they do not wash their hands afterward. If consumed, Salmonella can cause fatal infections in children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.
