Shopper-Card Data Traces Salmonella

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is using patients’ shopper cars to help tracking the trail of Salmonella caused by the tainted flavor enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) and identify retail facilities that sold the tainted products, reported the Associated Press.

"It was really exciting. It was a break in the investigation for sure," CDC epidemiologist Casey Barton Behravesh said, adding that prior to this outbreak the CDC, state and local health agencies used shopper cards to trace cases of food poisoning previously without much success.
