CHICAGO— A new study from Technomic revealed family dining restaurants are one of the largest segments of the foodservice industry representing over $33 billion in sales, $10 billion in purchases and more than 39,000 units. Major chains represent 40 percent of the business, which means small chains and independents represent a significant opportunity.

The study, “Family Dining: The Next Generation,” identifies the current state of affairs for the family dining segment, analyzes other key competitive segments, and evaluates the challenges of external competitive forces such as food courts, grocers and meals prepared at home. The study includes national family dining chains, regional chains and independents. Consumer perspectives are tapped to evaluate current performance and expectations in menu diversity or focus, culinary execution, product quality, service, décor and meal occasion.
