APPLETON, WI―Raw milk advocates are facing off against state and federal food safety advocates such as the FDA. The fans of unpasteurized milk claim say it tastes better, helps with digestive problems and boosts immunity, while the FDA warns the milk is "inherently dangerous" because It can contain harmful microorganisms, such as E. coli and Salmonella. A joint CDC and FDA statement said raw milk caused 45 foodborne illness outbreaks from 1998 to 2005.
The sale of raw milk is legal for human consumption, with varying restrictions, in 28 U.S. states, but attempts to tighten or loosen sales restrictions on raw milk are on the rise in several states, including Maryland, Texas, Connecticut and Wisconsin.
