GUELPH, Ontario, Canada—Supplementing a diet with soy reduces cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes, according to a new study published in The Journal of Nutrition.
Researchers studied participants with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes who consumed soy protein isolate and found a reduction in LDL ("bad") cholesterol and an improvement in the ratio of LDL:HDL cholesterol; thus demonstrating a beneficial effect of soy protein consumption on lowering risk for heart disease in individuals with diabetes.
