BRUSSELS—With the European Parliament elections on deck for early June, several key proposals impacting the nutrition and food industry in Europe are likely to see no movement until the new parliament convenes in the Fall. According to European consulting firm EAS, there has been great controversy surrounding the four European Commission (EC) proposals on a nutrient profiles scheme, food labeling regs, amendments to the novel food regulation and setting maximum levels for vitamins and minerals.

Xavier Lavigne, food law manager, EAS, noted the food labeling and novel food proposals are set for possible re-draft, and the proposal on maximum levels has already been delayed to late 2009. He said, “Taking into account the time needed for the decision-making process in the EU, none of these issues are likely to be finalized before the end of 2010, expect possibly the nutrient profiles scheme, which could, in theory, be adopted by the end of this year.”
