EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.—S.K. Dash, Ph.D., president and director of research at UAS Laboratories, presented a paper, Selection Criteria for Probiotics, at the 37th Dairy Industry Conference, held in early February 2009 in Goa and sponsored by the Indian Dairy Association (West Zone). Dash covers a range of topics formulators should consider when developing products incorporating probiotics including genus and species; sources; safety assessments and testing; established clinical benefits of the strain; and supplier QA/QC practices. The paper also lists the established labeling criteria from the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Probiotics Association (IPA).
