CHICAGO—According to a new report from Chicago-based Technomic, “2008 Technomic Top 100 Limited-Service Sandwich Chains Restaurant Report,” despite a slow restaurant economy in 2008, the sandwich sector is experiencing growth. During 2008, Subway added nearly a half billion dollars in revenues and 440 new units. Quiznos registered the second highest sales growth during the year.

“Though the economy has moved from bad to worse, the limited-service sandwich segment is holding its own,” says Darren Tristano, executive vice president, Technomic. Subway led the category with sales of over $8 billion, representing 43.5% of total top-100 sales. Arby’s was second with $3.3 billion in sales, comprising 17.6% of top-100 sales. Quiznos Subs was third in overall sales, with an estimated $1.9 billion in sales, for 10% of the top-100 total.
