Carmine, Cochineal Extract Must Be Labeled as Such

WASHINGTON—FDA finalized a rule to require companies to specifically cite cochineal extract and carmine on labels of food and cosmetic products containing these ingredients. While the names of most color additives do not have to be included on product labels, FDA made the change in response to concerns relating to severe allergic reactions to these colorants. In its comments on the final rule, FDA noted simple labeling by common name would be enough for consumers interested in avoiding the insect-derived additives for religious or dietary reasons. The new rule will be effective in early 2011.
