NEW ORLEANS─In 2005, 937 million adults worldwide were overweight, 396 million were obese, according to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity.

If this trend continues, by 2030, the respective number of overweight adults will reach 1.35 billion while the number of obese adults will reach 573 million individuals.

Study researchers concluded that "overweight and obesity are important clinical and public health burdens worldwide" and national prevention and treatment programs need to be enacted to resolve them.
