NEW YORK─ A diet rich in whole grains, leafy greens, fruits and low-fat dairy may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a new study published in Diabetes Care found. Researchers also found diets high in red meat, high-fat dairy and refined grains increase diabetes risk.

Study findings suggested that those who consumed the healthy diet were 15 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, while those on an unhealthy diet have an 18 percent risk of developing the disease.

The study highlights “the importance of the whole diet--rather than focusing on certain foods or food groups that might be beneficial,” Reuters reported.
