NEW YORK—The country-of-origin labeling law will take effect Sept. 30, requiring food retailers to label or display the country of origin for meat, produce and certain kinds of nuts, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The law will affect grocery stores and mass-merchandise outlets. Small food outlets and such places as butcher shops, restaurants and school cafeterias will not be required to participate.
Products produced or packaged before the 30th will not have the labeling. Food producers also have six months to comply. If they do not adhere to the regulation after the six-month grace period, they will be subject to fines of $1,000 per violation.
