FDA posted a Federal Register Notice announcing a public meeting by a subcommittee of the FDA’s Science Board on Sept. 16, 2008, to review the safety of bisphenol-A (BPA) in food contact applications.

The meeting has two purposes: for the subcommittee of the Science Board to discuss FDA’s draft assessment of the safety of BPA for use in food contact applications; and to solicit information and comments from interested persons.

BPA is a chemical produced for use primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics have many applications including use in certain food and drink packaging, e.g., water and infant bottles. Epoxy resins are used as lacquers to coat metal products such as food cans and bottle tops.

The FDA draft assessment is particularly focused on the concerns for developmental toxicity identified in recent assessments of BPA, including those of the National Toxicology Program and its expert panel.
