With its publication in the Federal Register tomorrow, the Feb. 2008 amendment to add barley betafiber as an additional source of beta-glucan fiber in the approved health claim for dietary fiber and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) will be finalized. The agency determined barley betafiber lowers serum total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, similar to the other fiber sources previously approved for the health claim.
