Viva Bayless!
Today, Chicago is celebrating our local amigo, Chef Rick Bayless. The owner and founder of Frontera Grill and Topolobompo, his two Chicago restaurants that showcase his world renowned Mexican cuisine, recently won Bravo TV's “Top Chef Masters” competition. He outlasted chefs from all over the world, including the two other finalists, Chef Michael Chiarello of Bottega in Napa Valley (who has his own TV show, “Napa Style”) and Chef Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys in San Francisco and Las Vegas.
The finals not only featured three top chefs in face-to-face competitions, but also showcased three different cuisines, Italian (Chiarello), French (Keller) and Bayless' Mexican.
Chef Bayless' victory is one more step in his crusade to gain the renown and acceptance for authenic Mexican cuisine that he has always believed it was due. His $100,000 winnings are being donated to his other great cause, the Frontera Farmer Foundation he founded to support the growth of sustainable farming in the Midwest. Seems both of his causes got a big boost from his victory.
Congratulations, Chef Rick Bayless, a true Chicago Master.
