Ooops, They Did It Again
I think it is time for every U.S. food manufacturer and retailer to search their databases and identify every product and ingredient that has been imported from, or contains ingredients imported from China, and take steps to test them for melamine content.
First it was pet foods, last week it was milk, and as announced yesterday by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, the melamine adulteration scandal has now extended to milk-based candy products produced in China, White Rabbit Creamy Candies in particular.
The N.Z. Food Safety Authority's tests found "unacceptably high" levels of melamine, high enough to cause health problems including the development of kidney stones.
In the U.S., the FDA is beginning to sample White Rabbit Creamy Candy as well as other food categories of Chinese imports in the dessert and beverage categories, i.e. milk-derived ingredients and food products containing milk. Unlike New Zealand, no melamine contaminated products have been found on U.S. store shelves.YET!
I think we may have only scratched the surface of this problem.Let's hope it doesn't go further.
