Johnny Come Lately?
Now that the European Union has joined New Zealand and other Pacific Basin countries in banning the import of baby foods that contain milk from China, and has imposed a new testing regimen requiring all food products containing more than 15% milk powder to be tested for melamine , when will we hear from our own government food safety watchdogs? So far we have not heard a peep.
It is time for our food safety guardians in Washington to communicate clearly what if any products containing milk powders from China have been imported stateside, most specifically baby foods and candies, and let the U.S. consumer know what steps are being taken to address this potential problem. With all the current crises we are facing in the financial sectors of our economy, the last thing we need is to suffer another food industry black eye because we didn't get ahead of the curve on this issue. We can't afford to be seen as a "Johnny come lately" on this.
