Last week, I—along with many other folks from the combined food, supplement and personal-care industries—took part in the Chicago stop of the SupplySide Science Tour. The day presented a unique opportunity to get the inside scientific scoop on a number of ingredients, including many that are rather new to food and drink, and how they can help add unique functional aspects to products. I’m in the process of developing a short report on the proceedings, so if you were unable to attend, stay tuned for that overview.

Now we’re firmly setting our focus on SupplySide West, taking place Oct. 10 to 14 in Las Vegas. One educational opportunity we recently unveiled is a new Practical Short Course on “Functional Food Product Development: Market, Regulations, Bioactive Compounds and Their Utilization.” This short course will focus on bioactives in functional foods and drinks and will take place all day Monday Oct. 11 and the morning of Tuesday the 12th. The speakers will cover a wide range of practical aspects of bioactives—those substances that interact with our bodies to deliver desired health-related benefits—and how to put them to best use in foods and supplements, as well as product positioning and other marketing concerns.

These and other SupplySide educational events are great opportunities to get a much-needed edge in our ever-competitive industries. The American public—throughout every stage in life—is increasingly looking for specific ways to improve their overall health and quality of life through foods, beverages, supplements and/or personal-care products. That’s a prevailing, long-term public direction, not a fad or passing fancy. Take a look at the many options available at this year’s SupplySide West to see how you and your business can benefit, and I’ll see you in Vegas.
