Dairy Important for Children's Bone Health

08/12/2008

A new study published  in The Journal of Pediatrics investigates the relationship between children’s dairy intake and its effect on bone health.

The Framingham study followed the diets of 106 children ages 3 to 5 years old over a 12-year period.

Researchers calculated the children’s average daily dairy intake and then assessed their bone health.

The findings showed that the children who consumed two or more servings of dairy per day had higher levels of bone mineral content and bone density.

The findings also showed those children who ate two or more servings of dairy and 4 oz. of protein had over 300 grams higher bone mineral content then children who did not.

The study ultimately revealed that dairy is key in healthy bone development, as it provides proteins, calcium and other nutrients.
